Rex Alan Patterson, born January 8, 1927, in Bundaberg, Queensland, and died April 13, 2016, in Mackay, Queensland, was an Australian Labor politician and the first Labor member elected to the House of Representatives seat of Dawson. He served as Minister for Northern Development from December 19, 1972, to June 6, 1975, and as Minister for the Northern Territory from October 1973, in which role he was sworn in by Queen Elizabeth II, the only occasion an Australian minister has been sworn in directly by the monarch, before briefly serving as Minister for Agriculture from October 14 to November 11, 1975, following Rex Connor's resignation. He lost his seat at the 1975 election that followed the government's dismissal on November 11.
