Doug Anthony

John Douglas Anthony, born December 31, 1929, in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, and died December 20, 2020, was an Australian politician who entered parliament in 1957 at age 27 following the death of his father, federal minister Hubert Lawrence Anthony, and went on to serve 27 years representing the Division of Richmond. He served as Minister for Primary Industry from 1967 to 1971, addressing wheat pricing issues and agricultural production crises while supporting farmers through economic difficulty, and he succeeded John McEwen as leader of the Country Party in 1971, a position he held until 1984. He served as deputy prime minister under three prime ministers, John Gorton, William McMahon and Malcolm Fraser, making him the second longest-serving deputy prime minister in Australian history, and retired from politics after the 1983 election defeat.
