Panjabrao Shamrao Deshmukh, also known as Bhausaheb Deshmukh, born December 27, 1898, and died April 10, 1965, was an Indian social activist and farmers' leader who served as India's Union Agriculture Minister under Jawaharlal Nehru from 1952 to 1962. During his decade-long tenure he launched the "Food for Millions" campaign in 1955, founded the Bharat Krishak Samaj farmers' society in 1956, introduced Japanese rice cultivation methods in 1958 and organized a World Agriculture Fair in 1959. He also founded the Shivaji Education Society at Amravati in 1932, which grew into one of Maharashtra's largest educational networks.
