Ioan Lazar Kalinderu, who lived from 1840 to 1913, was a Wallachian-Romanian jurist trained in Paris who spent thirty years as administrator of the crown domains of Romania's King Carol I. In that role he established model farms and a cottage industry, promoted literacy and livestock-breeding programs among estate workers, created the Bustenii mountain resort, and advanced modern forestry practice on the crown estates, alongside serving as president of the Romanian Academy from 1904 to 1907.
