Herbert Gardner, 1st Baron Burghclere

Herbert Colstoun Gardner, 1st Baron Burghclere, was a British Liberal politician, born 9 June 1846 and died 6 May 1921. He was Member of Parliament for Saffron Walden from 1885 until his elevation to the peerage in 1895, and served as President of the Board of Agriculture from 25 August 1892 to 21 June 1895 under Prime Ministers William Ewart Gladstone and Lord Rosebery. He was also a director of the P and O Steamship Company, an Ecclesiastical Commissioner, and an author who published a translation of Virgil's Georgics in 1904.
