Surjit Singh Barnala, born October 21, 1925, in Ateli, and died January 14, 2017, in Chandigarh, was an Indian politician who served as the 11th Chief Minister of Punjab from 1985 to 1987 and held numerous gubernatorial posts including Governor of Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh, and Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He was inducted into the Morarji Desai cabinet as Agriculture Minister beginning in 1977, a portfolio that then also covered irrigation, food, environment and forests, and in 1978 he signed the Ganga Waters Agreement with Bangladesh; he later served as Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers from 1998 to 1999 under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
