Lance Barnard

Lance Herbert Barnard, born May 1, 1919, in Launceston, Tasmania, and died August 6, 1997, was an Australian politician and diplomat who served as the third Deputy Prime Minister of Australia from 1972 to 1974. He entered Parliament in 1954 representing the Division of Bass and served as deputy leader of the Australian Labor Party from 1967 to 1974, holding the portfolio of Minister for Primary Industry, later renamed Minister for Agriculture, from December 1972, initially as one of only two ministers in the short-lived two-man Whitlam government. He left Parliament in 1975 to become Australia's ambassador to Sweden, Finland and Norway.
