John Ernest Silkin, born March 18, 1923, and died April 26, 1987, was a British Labour politician and solicitor known for his left-wing positions and a parliamentary career that ran from 1963 until his death. He served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from September 10, 1976, to May 4, 1979, under Prime Minister James Callaghan, having earlier served as Chief Whip and Minister of Public Buildings and Works. In opposition after 1979 he held shadow portfolios covering industry, the leadership of the House of Commons and defence, and he ran unsuccessfully for the Labour Party leadership in 1980 and deputy leadership in 1981.
