John Charles Kerin, born November 21, 1937, in Bowral, New South Wales, and died March 29, 2023, was an Australian economist and Labor politician who served in the House of Representatives from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1993. He served as Minister for Primary Industries and Energy from March 11, 1983, to June 3, 1991, under Prime Minister Bob Hawke, by far the longest tenure of any minister in that portfolio's history, during which he played a central role in the gradual abolition of most tariff protections on agricultural imports. He also served a brief six-month term as Treasurer of Australia before leaving parliament.
