Ian Sinclair

Ian McCahon Sinclair, born June 10, 1929, in Sydney, was an Australian politician who served in parliament for 35 years and led the National Party from 1984 to 1989. He served as either a minister or opposition frontbencher for all but a few months from 1965 to 1989, holding the position of Minister for Primary Industry across two periods, 1971 to 1972 and 1975 to 1979 under the Fraser government, and he later served as Minister for Communications from 1980 to 1982 and Minister for Defence from 1982 to 1983. He served under prime ministers from Menzies to McMahon and later became Speaker of the House of Representatives from March to August 1998, the only National Party member to hold that office.
