Ann Margaret Veneman, born June 29, 1949, served as the 27th United States Secretary of Agriculture from 2001 to 2005 under President George W. Bush, the first woman to hold the office. During her tenure she responded to foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in Europe, avian influenza, and the first detected case of mad cow disease in the United States in December 2003, and oversaw the shift from paper food stamps to electronic debit cards. She went on to serve as the fifth executive director of UNICEF from 2005 to 2010, the second woman to lead the organization.
