Sir Reginald Hugh Dorman-Smith, born March 10, 1899, and died March 20, 1977, was an Anglo-Irish soldier and politician best known as Governor of Burma during the Japanese invasion of the Second World War. Before entering colonial administration he became president of the National Farmers Union at the age of thirty two and was appointed Minister of Agriculture in 1939 under Neville Chamberlain, serving until 1940 as Member of Parliament for Petersfield. As Governor of Burma from 1941 to 1946 he oversaw the chaotic evacuation of civilians, including large numbers of Indian refugees, during the fall of Burma to Japanese forces in 1942, and spent the rest of the war in exile in Simla, India, before returning to Burma in 1945 and being replaced the following year.
