Joseph Aloysius Lyons, born September 15, 1879, and died April 7, 1939, was the tenth Prime Minister of Australia, serving from 1932 until his death in office, the first Australian prime minister to die while holding the position. He served as Minister for Agriculture from January 6, 1932, alongside the prime ministership, having earlier served as the 26th Premier of Tasmania from 1923 to 1928 and as Postmaster-General and Minister for Works and Railways under James Scullin. He was the inaugural leader of the United Australia Party and remains the only Australian prime minister to have come from Tasmania.
