Ezra Taft Benson (August 4, 1899 to May 30, 1994) was an American politician and religious leader who served as the 15th United States Secretary of Agriculture throughout both terms of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, from 1953 to 1961. In that office he opposed government price supports and subsidies, pushing instead for reduced federal intervention and farmer self-reliance despite significant opposition from agricultural interests. He was also a longtime leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joining its Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1943 and serving as the church's 13th president from 1985 until his death in 1994.
