Sinval Guazzelli

Sinval Sebastiao Duarte Guazzelli was a Brazilian lawyer and politician born in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1930. A law graduate of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, he began his career in Vacaria as vice mayor and mayor before being elected state deputy in 1958 and federal deputy in 1970. Installed as governor of Rio Grande do Sul by the military dictatorship, he held that office from 1975 to 1979, and was later elected lieutenant governor under Pedro Simon, becoming governor again when Simon resigned to run for the Senate and governing for eleven months before handing the office to Alceu Collares in 1991. He served as Brazil's Minister of Agriculture under President Itamar Franco from January 1994 to January 1995, and was admitted that year to the Order of Military Merit at the special grade of Grand Officer. He was elected federal deputy again in 1998 and remained in that office until his death in 2001 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
