Iris Rezende Machado was a Brazilian lawyer and politician who began his career in the Brazilian Labour Party and the Social Democratic Party before the military dictatorship's forced two-party system moved him into the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) and its later successor the PMDB. Born in Cristianopolis in 1933, he entered politics at sixteen and was elected a city councilman and, in 1965, mayor of Goiania. He was elected governor of Goias for two terms, the first from 1983 to 1986, leaving that office to serve as Brazil's Minister of Agriculture under President Jose Sarney from February 1986 to March 1990. He governed Goias a second time from 1991 to 1994, was elected a senator for Goias in 1994, and later served as Minister of Justice under President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. He died in Sao Paulo in 2021.
