Bernardo Cabral

Jose Bernardo Cabral is a Brazilian lawyer, law professor, psychologist and politician born in Manaus in 1932. One of the founders of the original Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), he was elected a federal deputy for Amazonas in 1966 and served as his party's vice leader until his mandate was revoked under the military dictatorship's Institutional Act No. 5 in 1968, which also suspended his political rights for ten years and ended his university teaching career for that period. After Brazil's redemocratization he was elected a federal deputy again through the PMDB, and in 1987 his party's bench chose him as rapporteur of the Constituent Assembly that drafted Brazil's 1988 Constitution, a position from which he was later removed. He was also a senator for Amazonas, a state deputy, and secretary of the Interior and of the Civil Cabinet under two Amazonas state governments. Under President Fernando Collor de Mello he served as Minister of Justice and, for a few days at the end of March and start of April 1990 during the transition into that government, as Minister of Agriculture.
