James Patrick Anderton, born James Patrick Byrne, was a New Zealand politician, born 21 January 1938 in Auckland and died 7 January 2018 in Christchurch, who left the Labour Party in 1989 to found and lead a series of left-wing parties, NewLabour, the Alliance and the Progressive Party, before rejoining Labour in 2011. He served as the fifteenth Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1999 to 2002 and as the first Minister of Economic Development from 1999 to 2005 under Helen Clark, then as Minister of Agriculture from 19 October 2005 to 19 November 2008, and is remembered chiefly as the driving force behind the creation of the state-owned Kiwibank.
