Daniel Edward Riley

Daniel Edward Riley was a Canadian rancher, insurance agent and politician from Alberta who served as the first mayor of High River when it became a town in 1906. He was a pioneer of irrigation in the region and one of the first ranchers to attempt growing Kentucky bluegrass in the foothills. Appointed to the Canadian Senate in 1927, he pursued agricultural policies that included extending grazing leases on federal lands from three years to twenty one, securing the removal of the embargo on Canadian cattle shipments to Britain, introducing beef carcass grading, establishing government control over stockyard operations, and setting up an animal diseases laboratory in western Canada. He was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1965.
