William Richard Motherwell

William Richard Motherwell was a Canadian farmer and politician who served as Saskatchewan's first Minister of Agriculture and later as federal Minister of Agriculture of Canada. A graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College who settled as a homesteader in what became Saskatchewan, he became an influential figure in prairie grain growers' advocacy before entering provincial politics, serving as Saskatchewan's Commissioner of Agriculture from 1905 to 1909 and its Minister of Agriculture from 1909 to 1919. He went on to serve as Canada's federal Minister of Agriculture from 1921 to 1930, shaping national agricultural policy during a period when dry-land farming methods were spreading across the prairie provinces.
