William Atcheson Stewart

William Atcheson Stewart was an Ontario cattle farmer and politician who represented the riding of Middlesex North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Progressive Conservative member from 1957 to 1975, serving as a cabinet minister under premiers Leslie Frost, John Robarts and Bill Davis. As a minister he was responsible for a series of major agricultural statutes, including the Milk Act of 1965, the Provincial Meat Inspection Act, the Crop Insurance Act and the University of Guelph Act of 1964, and he established the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario, the Ontario Food Council, the Ontario Farm Machinery Board and a veterinary assistance policy for Northern Ontario. He was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1988 representing Ontario.
