Martin Burrell

Martin Burrell was a Canadian politician, born 19 October 1858 in Faringdon, Berkshire, England, and died 20 March 1938. He emigrated to Canada as a young man and became a fruit grower near Grand Forks, British Columbia, on what became the largest apple tree nursery in the province, and was elected mayor of Grand Forks in 1903. He served as Minister of Agriculture in the Borden government from 16 October 1911 to 12 October 1917, then as Secretary of State of Canada and Minister of Mines from 1917 to 1919 and Minister of Customs and Inland Revenue from 1919 to 1920. Badly injured in the 1917 Parliament Buildings fire, he later served as Parliamentary Librarian until his death in 1938.
