Thomas Mackenzie

Sir Thomas Mackenzie was a Scottish-born New Zealand politician and explorer, born 10 March 1853 in Edinburgh and died 4 February 1930 in Dunedin, who emigrated as a child in 1858 and served as Minister of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce, and Commissioner of Forests from 1909 under Premier Joseph Ward, retaining Agriculture and Lands after briefly succeeding Ward as the eighteenth Prime Minister from 28 March to 10 July 1912. He then served as New Zealand High Commissioner in London from 1912 to 1920, and is remembered for his vigorous conservation advocacy, including founding the Native Bird Protection Society, now the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society.
