Miguel Arias Canete is a Spanish politician who served two separate terms as Spain's agriculture minister, first as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 2000 to 2004 under Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and again as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment from 2011 to 2014 under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. A member of the Popular Party who had earlier served in the European Parliament, he left Spanish domestic politics in 2014 to become European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, holding the newly combined portfolio through 2019 before retiring from politics. He was born in Madrid in 1950.
