Michel Cointat was a French agronomic and forestry engineer and politician, born in 1921 and died in 2013, who served as director general of Production and Markets at the Ministry of Agriculture from 1962 to 1967 before representing Ille-et-Vilaine as a deputy from 1967 to 1993 and serving as mayor of Fougeres from 1971 to 1983. He served as Minister of Agriculture from 7 January 1971 to 6 July 1972 under President Georges Pompidou, a tenure that included the milk strike of early 1972 affecting Brittany and the Loire Valley.
