Juan Jose Benayas was a Spanish lawyer and politician born in Torrijos, in Toledo province, in 1899 and dying in Madrid in 1989. Before his ministerial appointment he served as director general of Agrarian Reform from September 1933, and he held the agriculture portfolio himself from April to May 1935 under Premier Alejandro Lerroux during the Second Republic. A member of the center right Derecha Liberal Republicana led by Niceto Alcala Zamora, he later became dean of the College of Property Registrars and, after the Civil War, represented sugar industry employers as a Cortes deputy under Franco.
