Herbert Broadley

Sir Herbert Broadley was a British civil servant who served as Deputy Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization from 1948 to 1958 and briefly as its Acting Director-General in 1956. Born in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1892 and educated at Birkbeck College, University of London, he entered the United Kingdom Civil Service in 1912 and served in the India Office's military department before joining the UK Ministry of Food in 1939, rising to principal assistant secretary and deputy secretary. He led the FAO as Acting Director-General from April 1956, when Philip V. Cardon left the post, until Binay Ranjan Sen assumed office that November. After leaving the FAO he served as UNICEF's representative in Great Britain from 1958 to 1968.
