George Rothschild

George H. L. Rothschild is a dual British-Australian entomologist who served as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute, IRRI, from 1995 to 1997, bridging the tenures of Klaus Lampe and Ronald Cantrell. He earned an honors degree from the University of Nottingham in 1959 and a doctorate from Imperial College of Science and Technology in 1962, then built a long research career at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, CSIRO, rising to chief research scientist and deputy divisional chief. He was the founding director of Australia's Bureau of Rural Sciences and chief executive of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, ACIAR, positions spanning 1987 to 1998 around his IRRI tenure, and after his IRRI service he became a long-serving consultant to the Natural Resources Institute in the United Kingdom from 1998 onward, later also advising the UK's environment department and its Chemical Regulation Directorate between 2005 and 2015.
