Renate Elly Kunast is a German attorney and politician of Alliance 90/The Greens, born 15 December 1955, appointed Federal Minister of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture by Chancellor Gerhard Schroder in 2001 in the aftermath of the BSE mad cow disease crisis, a choice seen as reassuring to ecologically conscious voters given her lack of prior farming ties. She served until 2005, becoming known for expanding support for organic farming and for tightening animal welfare rules, at one point ranking in public opinion polls behind only Schroder and Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, and later chaired the Greens' parliamentary group in the Bundestag.
