Klaus Lampe

Klaus Lampe was a German agricultural engineer who served as the fifth Director General of the International Rice Research Institute, IRRI, from 1988 to 1995. Born on 27 May 1931 in Freiburg im Breisgau, the son of a university professor, he studied agronomy in Bonn and completed a doctorate in 1959 at the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, researching mechanized-harvesting damage to potatoes. He began his career with the German Agricultural Society, initiating its work in developing countries, spent 1965 to 1968 as an agricultural engineer in Afghanistan, and then held further agricultural development posts in West Germany before joining IRRI. During his seven years leading the institute he restructured its research from a discipline-based organization into a matrix management model adopted in 1990, intended to keep research programs closely tied to IRRI's goals while preserving scientific rigor, a change credited with reshaping the institute's structure and culture. He died in Germany on 6 February 2024 at the age of 92.
