Ilse Aigner is a German politician of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria, born 7 December 1964, who served as Federal Minister for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture from 31 October 2008 to 30 September 2013 under Angela Merkel, succeeding Horst Seehofer after he became Bavarian Minister-President. During her tenure she managed a 2011 dioxin contamination incident affecting eggs and meat by imposing stricter safety standards on animal feed manufacturers, opposed domestic cultivation of genetically modified crops while permitting their import for animal feed, and pressed for greater transparency in commodity markets.
