Yvonne Pinto is a plant virologist and agricultural development leader who became Director General of the International Rice Research Institute, IRRI, in April 2024. Born in Kenya and raised in Ethiopia before becoming a British and, by her own description, global citizen, she trained in plant sciences and agriculture at the University of Reading and earned a master's degree in biotechnology and a doctorate in virology from Imperial College London. Before leading IRRI she spent roughly fifteen years in private philanthropy directing investments in agriculture, enterprise, finance and education across Africa, and at IRRI she has guided the development of the institute's 2025 to 2030 strategy while also serving as CGIAR's Asia Pacific regional representative.
