David Gale Johnson (1916 to 2003) was an American agricultural economist and an expert on the agricultural economies of Russia and China. He chaired the department of economics at the University of Chicago, where he helped lead a program of agricultural economics research that attracted funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, and he served as president of the American Economics Association in 1999. The New York Times called him a pioneer in agricultural economics, and he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
