Archibald James McLean was a Canadian cattleman and politician who built one of southern Alberta's major ranching and export cattle businesses. Born in Elgin County, Ontario in 1860, he moved west in 1881 and by 1887 had become partner and manager of the CY Ranch in the foothills of southern Alberta; from offices in Lethbridge and Winnipeg he built up an export cattle trade that made the name "Archie McLean" synonymous with fair dealing and business integrity. He was one of the Big Four ranchers who helped found the Calgary Stampede in 1912, and he also represented his fellow ranchers as an elected member of the provincial parliament. He was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1963.
