Traditional and Mobile Farming Systems

Long-standing practices organized around moving farmers, herds or fields rather than fixing them in place year after year, including shifting cultivation, in which a cleared plot is cropped for a few seasons and then left to fallow, and transhumance, the seasonal movement of herds between fixed pastures. Belongs here: any practice defined by scheduled movement of land use or livestock across a landscape. Does not belong here: a fixed-field rotation practiced on the same plot every year, grouped under Crop Diversification and Rotation Systems.
