An English breed of sheep also known as the Leicester, Bakewell Leicester, Dishley Leicester, English Leicester, Improved Leicester and New Leicester, originally developed by the eighteenth-century breeding innovator Robert Bakewell. It is now one of Britain's rarest breeds, classed as endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, with fewer than 500 registered breeding females remaining in the United Kingdom.
