A modern American breed of sheep, developed by the breeder Michael Piel in Maine and named for Mount Katahdin in that state. From about 1957 Piel cross-bred a small number of African Hair Sheep from the Virgin Islands with various meat breeds, principally the Suffolk. The Katahdin is an easy-care sheep, growing a hair coat with little wool that moults naturally in spring so it never needs shearing, and it is reared for meat only.
