A New Zealand breed of sheep bred from about 1882 in the South Island by James Little, who crossbred Merino and Lincoln Longwool sheep; the breed gained official recognition in 1911. It has since been exported to Australia and to many countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America, and by 2021 it was reported present in twenty-five countries with a worldwide population estimated at just over 5 million.
