Homing Pigeon

The homing pigeon is a variety of domestic pigeon selectively bred for its ability to find its way home over very long distances, developed from the wild rock dove's innate homing sense, which relies on magnetoreception. Recorded competition flights have covered up to 1,800 kilometers, with homing pigeons typically flying around 97 km/h over moderate distances and the fastest racers reaching 160 km/h on short legs. Before the telephone, the breed carried messages commercially through pigeon post, and in wartime it served as the war pigeon, a role that made it one of history's most consequential domesticated birds.
