Hereford Pig

Hereford Pig is an American pig breed developed in the Midwestern United States in the 1920s and 1930s by crossing Duroc, Poland China and Chester White stock, aiming for a breed with the same red body and white face markings as Hereford cattle, from which it takes its name. It was formally recognized as a breed in the 1930s and raised chiefly for pork production in the American Midwest through the mid twentieth century. As commercial hog farming consolidated around a smaller number of high-growth breeds in the following decades, Hereford Pig numbers declined substantially, and it is now classified as a rare heritage breed. It is conserved today mainly by breed associations and small-scale breeders maintaining traditional American livestock breeds.
