The Göttingen minipig is the smallest domestic pig breed known in the world, weighing around 35 kilograms as an adult. It was developed from the late 1960s at the University of Göttingen Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics in Germany, by crossing the Minnesota Miniature, the Vietnamese Pot-bellied pig and the German Landrace. It was bred specifically for biomedical research, since its small size means it needs far less space, food and test material than a standard pig, and four breeding colonies now supply research programs worldwide. Beyond laboratory use, the breed small size and gentle temperament have also made it a popular pet pig.
