The Euskal Txerria, also known as the Basque pig, is a breed of pig native to the Basque Country in Spain and France. Basque farmers had long kept several related local pig types, and the breed was consolidated under its current name only in the 1920s. It grows more slowly and carries more fat than modern commercial breeds such as the Large White, which makes it less suited to intensive production but well suited to high-quality traditional food products; sows produce modest litters of around nine piglets and show strong maternal instincts. The breed nearly disappeared by 1981, when fewer than one hundred breeding sows remained, and today small farmers in the Basque Country keep it alive mainly for traditional food production.
