Sap-sucking crop pests of the order Hemiptera, including aphids, planthoppers, psyllids, whiteflies, mealybugs and shield bugs, which weaken plants by feeding and often carry plant viruses and bacteria. A pest belongs here when its cited article names it as one of these insects. Because they pierce plant tissue and drink sap, many of these insects also carry plant viruses and bacteria from plant to plant, so a small population can cause far larger losses than its feeding alone. Management often combines monitoring, natural enemies, resistant varieties and, where needed, insecticides. This heading gathers them so a visitor can compare how different sap feeders damage different crops.
