A whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) originating in Asia that now occurs throughout the tropics and subtropics and feeds on hundreds of crop species including cotton, tomato, cassava and cucurbits. It causes direct feeding damage and a sooty mold from its honeydew, but its greatest economic impact comes from transmitting begomoviruses such as cassava mosaic and tomato yellow leaf curl viruses.
