Akhal-Teke

Horses and Other Equines

The Akhal-Teke is a Turkmen horse breed known for speed, endurance, intelligence, a thin mane and a distinctive metallic sheen that has earned it the nickname Golden Horse. It is adapted to survive severe climatic conditions and is thought to be one of the oldest existing horse breeds, with roughly 6,600 living today, mostly in Turkmenistan but also across Europe and North America. It is probably descended from an older breed known as the Turkoman horse, and research indicates Turkoman stallions made significant contributions to the development of the Thoroughbred. Its studbook was closed in 1932, and the Soviet Union printed the breed's first registry in 1941, recording more than 700 horses.
