Welsh Pony

Welsh Pony refers to a group of pony and small horse breeds native to Wales, developed over centuries from hardy native mountain pony stock adapted to the rough terrain and harsh weather of the Welsh hills, later refined through crosses with Arabian, Thoroughbred and other breeds. The Welsh Pony and Cob Society, founded in 1901, recognizes several sections within the breed distinguished mainly by height and build, ranging from the small Welsh Mountain Pony section to larger riding pony and cob sections suited to driving and general purpose work. Welsh Ponies are known for stamina, soundness and a good temperament, qualities that have made them popular both as children's riding ponies and, in the larger sections, as capable adult riding and driving animals. The breed has been exported worldwide and has contributed to the development of several other pony breeds through crossbreeding.
