Suffolk Punch

Suffolk Punch is a heavy draft horse breed native to the county of Suffolk in eastern England, one of the oldest documented English horse breeds, with a studbook and breeding records tracing continuously back to a foundation stallion born in 1768. It is always chestnut in color, a trait fixed early in the breed's development, with a powerful, low set, compact build suited to pulling heavy loads, historically the principal draft horse of East Anglian arable farming. Suffolk Punch numbers fell drastically through the twentieth century as tractors and other farm machinery replaced draft horses in British agriculture, and the breed came close to extinction by the mid twentieth century, surviving only through the efforts of a small number of dedicated breeders and the Suffolk Horse Society. It remains classified as a rare and vulnerable breed today, conserved chiefly for heritage farming demonstrations, forestry work and showing rather than for commercial agricultural use.
