Norwegian Fjord Horse

Norwegian Fjord Horse is a small, sturdy horse breed native to the mountainous fjord regions of western Norway, considered one of the oldest and purest horse breeds in the world, with archaeological and genetic evidence suggesting its type has remained largely unchanged for well over a thousand years. It is always some shade of dun coloring, from a pale cream to a reddish brown, with a distinctive dark dorsal stripe running from the mane to the tail and a two toned mane, often trimmed short so the dark center hair stands upright against the lighter outer hair. Historically used for farm work, pack transport and light draft work in Norway's difficult mountainous terrain, the breed is valued today for its strength relative to its size, calm and willing temperament, and versatility across riding, driving and light draft disciplines. Norwegian Fjord Horse breed societies exist in Norway and in a number of other countries where it has since been exported for both work and pleasure riding.
