A type of goat found across Bangladesh, West Bengal, Assam and Odisha, typically with black skin and fur though brown, white or gray individuals also occur. It is small in size with a tight body structure, small horns and short legs; an adult male weighs about 25 to 30 kilograms and a female 20 to 25 kilograms. Milk production is poor, but the breed is very popular in Bangladesh for its low feed demand and high rate of kid production, reaching sexual maturity earlier than most other breeds, with females becoming pregnant twice a year and giving birth to one to three kids at a time; it adapts easily to any environment and has high disease resistance. It produces high-quality meat and skin and is prized for both its skin and its high proliferation rate, and plays an important economic role in reducing unemployment and poverty in Bangladesh.
