Girgentana Goat

The Girgentana, also called Nturcina, is an Italian breed of domestic goat native to the province of Agrigento in southern Sicily, its name drawn from Girgenti, the historic Sicilian name for Agrigento. It is a medium-sized dairy goat with large, nearly vertical spiral horns, a coat that is mostly white and sometimes tinged yellow or grey on the face, and a beard on both sexes; males stand about 85 centimeters and weigh about 65 kilograms, while females stand about 80 centimeters and weigh about 46 kilograms. Kept mainly for milk, with a lactation yield of 400 to 450 kilograms over 150 to 180 days, kids are also slaughtered between 30 and 60 days old for meat. The population has fallen sharply from more than 30,000 animals historically to 524 by 1993, and the FAO classified the breed as endangered in 2007, with only 390 registered animals recorded by 2013.
